Padres3Day One of the International Signing Period is in the books and the San Diego Padres have moved into the market in a big way. So far, the Padres have signed the following:

  • Gabriel Arias, ss, Venezuela (No. 4 prospect)
  • Jeisson Rosario, of, Dominican Republic (No. 6 prospect), $1.85 million.
  • Alison Quintero, c, Venezuela (No. 22 prospect)
  • Justin Lopez, ss, Venezuela (No. 28 prospect)
  • Tirso Ornelas, of, Mexico (No. 34 prospect)
  • Michell Miliano, rhp, Dominican Republic (No. 48 prospect)
  • Yordy Barley, ss, Dominican Republic (No. 50 prospect), $1 million.
  • Jose Manuel Guzman, rhp, Dominican Republic, $400,000.

That’s a lot of talent with a ton of money attached to it. The Padres are clearly going to go over the allotted $3,347,600 total for international signings. With the talent they were able to lock up, the club apparently doesn’t care about the penalties, which could severely hamper their ability to sign international players in the future.

So, in the wake of the First-Year Player Draft, all of the MLB clubs have stocked up. Time will tell how wise the Padres, and everyone else, did in this open market.
